Bulk gravel is sold by the cubic yard or by the ton. Order about 5–10% extra so the surface settles and compacts level.

Density varies by stone type and moisture. Pea gravel is lighter than crushed limestone, so confirm the supplier's t/yd³ for the exact tonnage.

How it works

  1. 1

    Measure the area

Enter the length and width of the area you are covering.

  2. 2

    Set the depth

Type the depth in inches. Two to three inches suits a path, four or more a driveway base.

  3. 3

    Read the volume

See the cubic yards, the tons by weight and the cubic feet.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate gravel in cubic yards?
Multiply length by width by depth in feet for the cubic feet, then divide by 27 for cubic yards. The calculator does this from inches and adds the tonnage.
How many tons of gravel in a cubic yard?
Crushed stone runs about 1.4 tons per cubic yard, though pea gravel is lighter. The default is editable, so set your supplier’s figure for an exact tonnage.
How deep should gravel be?
A walking path needs two to three inches; a driveway wants four or more over a compacted base. Order a little extra so it settles level.
Are these numbers exact?
They are close planning estimates, not a substitute for a contractor takeoff. Real quantities depend on your terrain, post spacing, waste and local building code, so buy a little extra and confirm against your supplier.
Is my fence design sent anywhere?
No. Everything runs in your browser. The layout, lengths and prices you enter stay on your device, nothing is uploaded, logged or stored, and it all clears when you close the tab.
