Covering both faces with 2 coats of a 200 ft²/gal product. Buy whole gallons, a little left over is normal.

Rough, weathered or bare wood soaks up more on the first coat. Posts, rails and pickets all add surface, so round up.

Frequently asked questions

How much stain do I need for a fence?
Multiply the length by the height for the face area, then by the sides and coats, and divide by the product’s coverage. The calculator does this and rounds up to whole gallons.
Why does rough wood need more stain?
Rough-sawn, weathered or bare wood has more surface and drinks the first coat. The rough setting adds about half again to the estimate so you do not run short.
How many coats should I apply?
Most stains call for one to two coats; semi-transparent and solid colours often want two. The first coat on new wood always uses the most.
Are these numbers exact?
They are close planning estimates, not a substitute for a contractor takeoff. Real quantities depend on your terrain, post spacing, waste and local building code, so buy a little extra and confirm against your supplier.
Is my fence design sent anywhere?
No. Everything runs in your browser. The layout, lengths and prices you enter stay on your device, nothing is uploaded, logged or stored, and it all clears when you close the tab.
